Authors' objectives:

Hydrocephalus is an abnormal build-up of fluid and pressure in the brain that causes headaches, pain, and drowsiness. It can lead to brain injury and even death. Hydrocephalus arises because of a blockage in the circulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), the liquid that surrounds, nourishes, and protects the brain. CSF is produced in cavities (ventricles) of the brain and circulates throughout the brain and spinal cord before being reabsorbed into the bloodstream of the brain. However, circulation of CSF can become blocked in some infants and children, either by congenital malformation of the brain or as a result of infection (most commonly meningitis) or trauma. Pediatric hydrocephalus affects around 3 to 4 in 1000 live births.
