This report accommodates an evaluation of the criteria for approval and planning of liver transplantation centres as proposed by the Dutch State Secretary of Health in a recent draft regulation.

Authors' results and conclusions: This report accommodates an evaluation of the criteria for approval and planning of liver transplantation centres as proposed by the Dutch State Secretary of Health in a recent draft regulation
Authors' recommendations: The report outlines the developments in liver transplantation. The Standing Committee describes how indications for liver transplantation have broadened over the last 5 years. It is estimated that the demand for liver transplantations will increase 120 per year in the near future in the Netherlands. It is recommended that two centres be approved shortly to perform liver transplantations in the Netherlands. In addition the Committee recommends that pediatric liver transplantations be part of a well-established adult program in one of these centres. Implications for practice:Indications have been broadened recently to include alcoholic cirrhosis, viral hepatitis (B and C). Other output or dissemination activity: Acceptance of recommendations: Following the recommendations of the report the Minister of Health has recently decided to approve 2 centres. One of these centres also serves as a pediatric centre.
