Record ID 32000000021
English, French
Authors' objectives:

This report reviews the available data on the efficacy, associated complications and costs of left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) and discusses the ethical and social issues raised by their use.

Authors' recommendations: This report concludes that LVAD is an effective and innovated technology. It should be used, at least for now, as a bridge to transplantation within a context of data collection for research purposes. Moreover, use of this technology should occur once several practical and administrative issues will have been resolved, including the number of implantations, the number of LVAD centres and the establishment of a functional communication network between cardiac surgery centres.
