Authors' recommendations: The inhalation administration of nitrous oxide women during childbirth could be an alternative to the interventions commonly used for this purpose. This report assesses the efficacy and safety of nitrous oxide 50% mixed with oxygen in the use as inhalation analgesic during labor. This review has been undertaken to synthesize the clinical evidence available in scientific literature. We found 230 references and after applied inclusion criteria were included four articles. The included studies have several limitations and moderate methodological quality. The results, in terms of efficacy, have the administration of nitrous oxide inhalation as a treatment that produces moderate but satisfactory analgesia in labor. But the degree of analgesia is less than when using other types of analgesics or anesthetics (enflurane, sevoflurane, remifentanil), so their efficacy is lower. The analgesic use for 50% is presented as a safe and has few side effects occurred during delivery. However, it is advisable to control oxygen saturation in women during labor and the administration of a local anesthetic if necessary perform episiotomy. Nitrous oxide is shown as a moderate analgesic activity and safety, to be used as an analgesic 50% inhaled oxygen during labor, so it is considered feasible its possible introduction in daily clinical practice.
