Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) were developed to reduce the symptoms of depression, and many SSRIs are currently marketed for the treatment of depression and anxiety. More recently, SSRIs have also been investigated for the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
