Intradiscal electrothermal therapy (IDET)
Record ID 32010000992
English
Authors' objectives:
Intradiscal electrothermal therapy (IDET) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that uses a flexible electrode to apply conductive heat directly to the annulus fibrosus, the outer component of intervertebral discs. This technique has been proposed for the treatment of the low back pain believed to be caused by internal disc disruption, a condition characterized by radial fissures in the annulus fibrosus with consequent degradation of the annulus fibrosis and the inner component of intervertebral discs, the nucleus pulposus. IDET is designed to coagulate annular tissue as a means to enhance the structural integrity of the annulus, thereby reducing pain originating in the annulus.
