Authors' objectives:
Anticonvulsant medications were developed to reduce the likelihood of epileptic episodes in patients with seizure disorder. The purpose of anticonvulsant therapy for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is to reduce or eliminate the symptoms of PTSD and to reduce the likelihood of relapse once symptoms have been suppressed. Anticonvulsant medications may be used as monotherapy and as adjunctive therapy for patients diagnosed with PTSD.
