Authors' objectives:
A choroidal hemangioma is a benign tumor containing a mass of abnormal blood vessels that grows in the choroidal layer, which lies between the retina and the outer surface of the eye. Although the cause of hemangioma is unknown, one survey indicated that it occurs at approximately the same frequency as ocular melanoma, which has an annual incidence of 0.6 cases per 100,000 persons. Profound vision loss can occur due to retinal degeneration or retinal detachment caused by a hemangioma; however, these tumors are often asymptomatic and may be managed best by periodic observation until vision starts to be affected. Traditional treatments for choroidal hemangioma include watchful waiting, laser therapy, and radiation therapy.
