Photodynamic therapy with visudyne (verteporfin) (QLT Inc.) for central serous retinopathy (CSR)
Central serous retinopathy (CSR) occurs when fluid leaks from capillaries in the choroidal layer, which lies between the retina and the outer surface of the eye, causing detachment of the retina and distortion of vision. Although the cause of CSR is unknown, one survey indicated that each year, it occurs in 9.9 out of every 100,000 men and in 1.7 out of every 100,000 women. Since retinal detachment can also occur due to inflammation, cancer, and growth of abnormal new blood vessels in the retina, these disorders must be ruled out to establish a diagnosis of CSR. Laser photocoagulation is a widely accepted therapy for CSR; however, most patients are encouraged to delay use of this therapy since patients with CSR usually get better without any treatment.
