Patellofemoral replacement for isolated osteoarthritis of the knee

Record ID 32010000932
English
Authors' objectives:

Osteoarthritis involves the gradual destruction of cartilage in joints such as the knee, and affects over 27 million people in the United States. Isolated patellofemoral arthritis, involving only the junction between the kneecap (patella) and the thighbone (femur), affects 5% to 10% of patients with knee pain. It has many causes such as trauma, malalignment of the joint, and age-related degeneration. Conservative therapy includes antiinflammatory drugs, physical therapy, and weight loss. If ineffective, surgery may be needed to clean debris out of the joint and/or reposition the patella. Severe patellofemoral osteoarthritis may necessitate total knee replacement, in which the entire knee joint is replaced with an artificial prosthesis.
