Needleless intravenous infusion devices and bloodstream infections in patients
Record ID 32010000931
English
Authors' objectives:
Intravenous catheters are commonly used in hospitals to provide intravenous access for administration of fluids and medication, especially in intensive care units (ICUs). However, the use of intravenous catheters places patients at risk of acquiring bloodstream infections via bacterial contamination of the catheter. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates approximately 250,000 catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs) occur annually in American hospitals; approximately 80,000 of these episodes occur in the ICU. Attributable mortality ranges from 12% to 25%.
