Authors' objectives:

According to guidelines prepared by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 38% of all infections contracted in hospitals are surgical site infections (SSIs), making SSI the third most common cause of hospital-acquired infections. Despite improvements in infection control practices, SSI remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. For example, in patients who develop SSI, average hospital length of stay increases by 1 to 2 weeks.
