Corneal cross-linking for treatment of keratoconus
Record ID 32010000917
English
Authors' objectives:
Keratoconus is a disorder that alters the curvature of the front of the eye in approximately 1 of every 2000 persons in the general population. This disorder affects both eyes in over 90% of cases. During keratoconus, the sides of the cornea become steeper and the cornea becomes thinner causing progressive nearsightedness and astigmatism. Although its cause is not known, treatment of keratoconus with rigid contact lenses is often successful. For patients who have severe disease or who cannot tolerate contact lenses, surgery might be needed, for example, a corneal transplantation procedure such as penetrating keratoplasty.
