Authors' objectives:

The National Center for Health Statistics estimates that in 2006, in the United States, 253,000 patients underwent a total of 448,000 coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgeries. During and after surgery, the volume of blood being pumped by the heart is monitored to detect any decreases in heart function that could lead to organ damage. A widely used method for measuring cardiac output involves injection of cold fluid from a pulmonary artery catheter followed by measurements of the rate of warming of the fluid. Although this technique is considered reliable, it requires an indwelling pulmonary artery catheter and, in its simplest form, it does not provide continuous information about cardiac output.
