Computerized provider order entry for medications: outpatients

Record ID 32010000888
English
Authors' objectives:

Computerized provider order entry (CPOE) includes a variety of computer-based systems for the ordering of medications, investigations, and other patient services. It replaces the traditional use of handwritten orders in patient charts, generally entered by physicians. Although most applications are in hospital inpatient settings, CPOE is also increasingly seen in outpatient environments. One goal of CPOE is to reduce medication errors, i.e., through use of CPOE for medication prescribing, ideally preventing inappropriate drug use and adverse drug events.
