Antimicrobial central venous catheters

Authors' objectives:

Antimicrobial central venous catheters (AICVCs) are intended to prevent central line-associated blood stream infections (CLABSIs) by coating or otherwise incorporating either 1 or both surfaces of the catheter with an antimicrobial agent. Some of the compounds used on currently marketed catheters include the antiseptic combination of chlorhexidine and silver sulfadiazine (C-SS); the antibiotic combination of rifampicin and minocycline (M-R); and a compound of silver, platinum, and carbon black (SPC).
