Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) for the assessment of peripheral artery disease (PAD) of the lower extremities

Record ID 32010000841
English
Authors' objectives:

Peripheral artery disease of the lower extremities involves the obstruction of arteries in the lower limbs by fatty deposits (atherosclerotic plaques). This reduces blood flow and oxygenation of the limbs, leading to pain, skin ulcers, and when severe, gangrene. The blockages are treated with a drug regimen, a percutaneous procedure (through a small incision in the skin) such as balloon angioplasty, or open surgery. The current standard for assessing the location and severity of peripheral artery blockages, and for guiding treatment is conventional contrast angiography. For this, contrast dye is injected into the artery through a catheter and x-rays are taken, which provide a 2-dimensional picture of the arteries and any blockages.
