Authors' objectives:

In 2006, the Catalan Agency for Health Information, Assessment and Quality (CAHIAQ, formerly known as CAHTA) elaborated a technical consultation on cochlear implants (CI) that aimed to describe the clinical indications of CI in adults and children and to assess their safety and efficacy based on the available scientific evidence. Within the collaboration framework projected in the Quality Plan for the National Health System, the CAHIAQ was assigned the task of elaborating an assessment report on the efficacy/effectiveness and efficiency of BCI in children and indication criteria of CI in adults and children, with the following objectives: 1) to analyse available scientific knowledge on the effectiveness, safety, prognostic factors and cost-effectiveness of bilateral cochlear implants (BCI) in children with severe to profound bilateral neurosensory hypoacusis and 2) indication criteria of cochlear implants in children and adults.

Authors' recommendations: There is insufficient evidence on the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness (C-E) of BCI in children due to the methodological limitations of the studies published up until now. Recommendations on indication criteria of CI in children and adults are generally weak and based on clinical experience. It is necessary to carry out higher quality epidemiological studies that assess the advantages of CI in children and adults.
