Authors' objectives: The systematic review has two objectives. 1) To evaluate the clinical effects, safety and cost-effectiveness of 'atypical' antipsychotics, compared to conventional drugs, placebo and other atypical drugs. 2) To investigate response in people with 'treatment resistant' schizophrenia, people with predominantly negative symptoms and people experiencing their first episode of schizophrenia. In addition, an economic model will be constructed using data from the systematic review of clinical effectiveness. Search strategies will focus on retrieving randomised controlled trials of the following atypical antipsychotics: Aripiprazole, L-745870, Melperon, Piquindone hydrochloride, Sertindole, Ziprasidone, Zotepine, Thioridazine, Loxapine, Amisulpiride and Methotrimeprazine. Relevant electronic databases will be searched and reference lists of retrieved papers scanned. This will include a search of electronic conference proceedings. Experts working in the field and pharmaceutical companies will be contacted. Searches will not be restricted by language or by country of origin of trials.
