Authors' recommendations: Research projects require considerable care in planning and execution if they are to contribute usefully to scientific knowledge and the care of people. However, serious deficiencies in the reporting of research are well-documented. Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) are the focus of particular scrutiny because of their important direct link to health care. The CONSORT Statement (1996 and 2001) presented recommendations for the proper reporting of RCTs. The explicit goal of the CONSORT Group is to foster and facilitate proper reporting of randomised trials. Knowledge that poor research can no longer be hidden behind obscure reporting confers benefit on future trials. The work of CONSORT is extremely wide relevance to the quality of clinical research across all medical areas. There is accumulating evidence that CONSORT has had a beneficial impact on the quality of published articles. The achievements of CONSORT have been despite receiving only sporadic and limited funding, so that many planned activities have not been possible. This application would provide two part-time posts to assist the organisation and research activities of the CONSORT Group. It would enable the Group to produce a new revised Statement and several other related products to enhance the scope and influence of the CONSORT recommendations.
