Authors' objectives:

This report assesses transmyocardial laser revascularisation (TMR), which is a therapeutic procedure for refractory angina.

Authors' recommendations: MSAC found there is insufficient evidence to conclude that the clinical benefits of TMR outweigh the potential risks as: the procedure is associated with 3-5 per cent peri-operative mortality; and there is uncertainty in symptom relief beyond 12 months. In addition, the cost effectiveness ratios are considered unfavourable. MSAC therefore recommends that public funding for TMR should not be supported at this time.
Authors' methods: Systematic review
