Authors' recommendations: There are few studies that assess Prometheus® system and with methodological limitations, which hindered rigorous recommendations about the effectiveness of this technique in the treatment of liver failure. There is no sufficient data to assess the impact of the Prometheus® system on survival. This technique can be considered safe and well-tolerated by patients, though with adverse haemodynamic changes consistent in a drop in mean arterial pressure. This system has the capacity to purify both albumin-bound and water-solved substances, with significant decreases in the levels of bilirubin, bile acids, ammonium, creatinine and urea without a significant improvement in the grade of hepatic encephalopathy.
