Authors' objectives:

The objective of this report is to assess the relative contribution of FDG-PET to clinical management of neurological patients. This report examines whether this technology is able to provide a higher diagnostic accuracy compared to other available technologies, if it influences the patient's therapeutic management, and if its use can further benefit them.

Authors' recommendations: There are many technically possible clinical applications of FDG-PET in neurology. Nevertheless, there are two specific situations in which this technique appears to be useful for clinical patient management: 1. Differentiation of radionecrosis from relapses or residual lesions in operated and radiated tumours (especially gliomas). 2. Epileptogenic focus lateralization or location in uncontrolled temporal epilepsies in an integrated and diagnostic strategy, addressed to indicate and plan surgical treatment.
