Authors' objectives:
This report aims to review the different strategies developed at the European level related with the issue of health and environment, s well as a review on methods to conduct HIA and its likely application in Spain.
Authors' results and conclusions:
The European strategy on environment and health requires that the member states integrate their health and environmental data to assess the effects that environmental factors are producing at the global level. Their first objective is to improve the information that links the existing relationship between sources of contamination and health effects. Thus, the member states national action plans have to obtain environmental indicators that associate both sides. In Spain, knowledge and data regarding the relationship between environmental factors and health are limited. The multiplicity of responsibilities in matters of health and environment represents a barrier to have a deeper understanding on the relationship between health and environment.
Authors' recommendations:
HIA could be a potentially useful tool to assess the relationship between health and environment. To conduct HIA it is necessary to facilitate the integration of the existing data in both areas environmental and health to perform the initial diagnosis and be able to investigate the late effects of the policy measures implemented. This way it will be possible the systematic monitoring of the health effects from the actions taken derived from HIA, gaining a deeper knowledge of the environmental factors that cause them.
