Authors' objectives:

To assess the effcicacy, effectiveness and quality of life of intraoperative radiotherapy as a treatment for soft tissues sarcomas. To assess the safety of this treatment.

Authors' results and conclusions: 12 studies were included and also a systematic review. Most of them were case-series without a comparison group. The studies showed a different survival depending on the sarcoma location and its extension. Respecting the adverse effects, the most frequent would be related with the tissue dehiscence and ischemic processes. It can also appear periferic neuropathy in some types of sarcomas. There are no results on quality of life and the quality of the published studies is poor.
Authors' recommendations: The published evidence does not clearly show a better survival of intraoperative radiotherapy for soft tissues sarcomas compared with other procedures. It could lower the risk of local recurrence in highly selected patients. Intraoperative radiotherapy is a relatively safe procedure.
Authors' methods: Systematic review
