Authors' objectives:

Tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) is an assay technique; two mass spectrometers are used to extract and analyze the molecular composition of blood. This technique identifies and quantifies the analytes based on their molecular mass and charge. MS/MS can be used to detect inborn errors of metabolism as part of routine neonatal screening; the objective of neonatal screening is to detect metabolic disorders early and institute treatment, such as dietary intervention, before damage occurs. This technique can detect amino acid metabolic disorders, urea cycle disorders, fatty acid oxidation disorders, and organic acid metabolic disorders.
