Authors' objectives:

Although central venous catheters (CVCs) provide necessary access to the vascular system in patients who are ill, their use is not infrequently associated with catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSI), a serious complication. One strategy for preventing CRBSIs is the use of CVCs coated with or constructed with antimicrobial agents of various types including: the antiseptic combination silver sulfadiazine/chlorhexidine; the antibiotic combination rifampicin/minocycline; and silver-containing compounds such as a silver, platinum, carbon black combination.
