Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing in the treatment of post traumatic stress disorder

Authors' objectives:

To summarise the evidence relating to Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), a relatively new form of psychotherapy designed to alleviate symptoms of anxiety, depression, avoidance of trauma related thoughts and intrusive memories.

Authors' recommendations: The evidence for effectiveness is of insufficient quality to reach a clear conclusion. Small sample sizes, high losses to follow up and inadequate description of randomisation processes threaten the internal validity of studies. Furthermore, the applicability of some of the most methodologically sound studies to UK practice in this area is open to question given the varied case mix studied. However, this is a promising technology which may be at least as effective as other psychotherapies and has advantages in terms of simplicity of administration and faster alleviation of symptoms. Further evidence is required and the Committee noted the ongoing British trial of EMDR due to report in 1999. Further appraisal of this technology will be warranted at that time.
