Authors' objectives:

To provide an overview of a new range of flexible digestive and bronchial endoscopes fitted with single-use sheaths.

Authors' recommendations: NB The following recommendation was developed exclusively for the Chief Executive Officer of the AP-HP, the public hospital network of Paris area, for his use as an aid in the decision making process. In any other context, it should be considered nothing more than an element of information. The CEDIT considers that flexible endoscopes with disposable sheaths could improve the safety of the endoscopic procedure and make it easier to organise the workload of AP-HP Endoscopy Departments. As videoendoscopes with disposable sheaths are not yet available, this technology will apply mainly to bronchial endoscopes. However, the CEDIT considers that this technology has been insufficiently evaluated and so the Committee recommends that a study of the technical performance of the bronchial endoscopes should be carried out to investigate the reliability and safety of the microbiological barrier provided by the sheaths under conditions of clinical use.
