A summary of the evidence for use of acupuncture from systematic reviews and meta-analyses

Authors' objectives:

To summarize the best available evidence of the safety and efficacy of acupuncture to inform the scope of practice in VA patient care.

Authors' recommendations: While acupuncture appears to be a safe procedure, the results highlight the overall poor quality of studies and reporting in the evidence base. Higher quality studies are beginning to emerge. However, none warrant the strongest Level A recommendation. Also noted is the heterogeneity of the evidence base with respect to study populations, acupuncture techniques, comparators, and outcome variables.
