The term plethysmography is derived from the Greek plethysmo, to increase, and graphos, to write, and refers to a method of measuring changes in volume of the body, a limb, or a digit. Plethysmographic techniques can be used to measure blood volume changes (an indirect measure of blood flow) to detect decreases in blood flow indicative of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI).
