Authors' objectives:

To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of intragastric balloons for patients with obesity.

Authors' recommendations: Limited evidence has resulted from some complex and inadequate study designs, variety of outcomes measures, clinical diversity, and absence of a consensus about how toreport the finds. Thus, there is a lack of robustness in the evidence supporting the effectiveness of intragastric balloons as compared to conventional strategies for weight loss in patients with obesity. However, the motivation and encouragement of eating behaviour change are a coadjuvant factor to weight loss and its maintaining through both an adequate diet and behaviour change program.It is advisable to compare costs of an adequate diet and behaviour change program and intragastric balloons, despite existing evidence of little additional benefits of intragastric balloons in weight loss.
