Authors' objectives:
The objective of this review is to examine the effects of photodynamic therapy in the treatment of neovascular age-related macular degeneration.
Authors' recommendations:
Photodynamic therapy in people with choroidal neovascularization due to neovascular age-related macular degeneration is effective in preventing vision loss. The results and potential adverse effects of this treatment should be followed closely. Additional independent trials of Verteporfin are necessary in order to prove that the effects observed in this study are consistent and to determine important, but as yet unsolved, issues, especially regarding quality of life and cost.
