Authors' objectives:
To evaluate effectiveness and safety of activated protein C or drotrecogin-alpha in patients with severe sepsis.
Authors' recommendations:
Drotrecogin-alpha reduces the risk of mortality in patients with severe sepsis and initially with high risk of mortality, but is not effective in patients at low risk of mortality with severe sepsis. The possibility of type I error (by chance) should not be discarded. On the other hand, drotrecoginalpha for patients with severe sepsis, with or without high risk of mortality, is associated to significant risk of hemorrhagic events.
