Authors' results and conclusions: The provision of free nicotine patches to smokers appears to be more effective for smoking cessation than counselling alone in the short-term. However, there is a lack of long-term follow-up of all participants in the majority of studies included in this assessment. There is also a lack of good quality, current economic data but the data available suggests a low cost per life year saved may result in long-term savings for the health system.
Authors' recommendations: Given the potential benefits of free nicotine patches in rural and remote communities where limited smoking cessation alternatives are available, an horizon scanning report is recommended.
