Lymphatic mapping for identification of sentinel nodes in breast cancer

Record ID 32006001087
English
Authors' objectives:

Lymphatic mapping is a procedure in which an injected tracer is used to map lymphatic drainage from a tumor in order to identify the sentinel lymph node(s), the first lymph node(s) receiving direct drainage of lymph from the primary tumor. Lymphatic mapping can be performed using vital dye or a radioactive colloid/radioisotope as a tracer. Removal and histologic examination of the sentinel lymph node, or sentinel node biopsy, has been proposed as an alternative to complete axillary lymph node dissection as a method of breast cancer staging.
