Solitary pancreas transplantation is performed in nonuremic or preuremic patients with type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus with the goal of improving quality of life by eliminating the need for exogenous insulin and its associated problems with imperfect glucose control and preventing or reversing secondary diabetic complications, including retinopathy, neuropathy, nephropathy, and vasculopathy.
