Authors' objectives:

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a temporary life support technique that is used as a bedside life support system for intermediate-term (days or weeks) partial cardiopulmonary bypass for pre- and postoperative support of graft failure and as a bridge to implantable ventricular assist devices (VADs) and/or organ transplantation. ECMO is also used to support non-heart-beating organ donors until a suitable organ recipient has been located.
