Authors' objectives:

Sentinel node biopsy (SNB) is a cancer staging technique in which the first lymph node(s) to receive lymph from the primary tumor, the sentinel node(s), is removed and examined histologically for tumor cells. The use of SNB for staging breast cancer is based on the assumption that if the first lymph node in the axillary chain is negative for tumor cells, then the remaining nodes will also be negative, and complete axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) is unnecessary. In this way, the morbidity associated with complete ALND would be avoided in patients with negative axillary nodes. Patients who are diagnosed with a positive SNB undergo standard lymphadenectomy to determine the extent of lymph node involvement.
