Implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) are devices that combine detection of lethal cardiac arrhythmias with immediate appropriate electrical discharge to restore normal cardiac rhythm and function, preventing cardiac arrest and death. ICDs can be used for primary prevention, defined as prevention of a first life-threatening arrhythmic event, or secondary prevention, which refers to the prevention of an additional life-threatening event in survivors of sudden cardiac arrest or patients with recurrent unstable rhythms.
