Candesartan cilexetil, hydrolyzed to its active form candesartan, is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) that is intended for the treatment of hypertension and for the treatment of heart failure (HF) (New York Heart Association [NYHA] Class II-IV) in patients with left ventricular systolic dysfunction (left ventricular ejection fraction [LVEF] # 40%) to reduce cardiovascular death and to reduce HF hospitalizations. In addition, candesartan may be used in combination with an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor.
