Authors' recommendations: Future improvements in the sensitivity of computer-aided detection (CAD) prompts to masses and architectural distortions, and in the integration of information, such as both views of the breast and comparison with prior images, are likely to have a significant impact on the usefulness of this device. There is a clear need for proper large-scale prospective studies to be conducted with radiologists of variable experience and in representative screening populations. Better quality information on the accuracy of CAD assistance (in particular, specificity and positive or negative predictive values) in comparison to double-reading of mammography is essential to determine the potential benefits of the technology in Australia.
