Authors' results and conclusions: Based on Australian government interest in reducing medication error, and the recommendation by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to introduce mandatory barcoding of all single use dose packaging of drugs, it is likely that barcoding may be trialled in the Australian Health system in the future. However, the evidence-base appears to be limited and of poor quality.
