Authors' objectives: This assessment was undertaken to provide the broadest possible advice regarding the safety, effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of sacral nerve stimulation (SNS) for the treatment of faecal incontinence.
Authors' recommendations: MSAC recommended that there is evidence of safety for sacral nerve stimulation in adults with faecal incontinence refractory to conservative, non-surgical treatment and who have an anatomically intact but functionally deficient anal sphincter. The total number of patients is small; there is some evidence of effectiveness and cost-effectiveness. MSAC supports public funding in these circumstances.
Authors' methods: Systematic Review
