Authors' objectives:

To evaluate the current state of telemedicine applications in Finland.

Authors' results and conclusions: In this report 40 health care units were found to be engaging in telemedicine, while 11 health care colleges and three technical research institutes have the potential for using telemedicine applications.
Authors' recommendations: Very little is known at the moment of the effects and effectiveness of telemedicine applications, and the evaluation of methods and technology is urgently needed in this field. Aspects of confidentiality in telemedicine also need to be evaluated. The exchange of experts between Finland and other pioneering telemedicine countries should be encouraged, as should the construction of telemedicine applications with the nearby regions.
