Umbilical cord blood stem cell transplantation (UCBSCT) provides functional hematopoietic stem cells from a healthy donor to patients with profound myelosuppression resulting from high-dose chemotherapy and radiotherapy, from genetic immunodeficiency diseases, or from inborn errors of metabolism. The goal of UCBSCT is to restore bone marrow function and improve disease-free survival.
