Sialic acid and lipid-associated sialic acid (LASA), although present in the membranes of normal cells, can be present in high concentration in malignant cells. Measurement of serum levels of total sialic acid (TSA) and LASA has been investigated as a potential tool for cancer diagnosis, prognosis, and/or treatment planning.
