Authors' objectives:
Semi-implantable electromagnetic hearing aids consist of a magnetic implant that is surgically attached to the ossicles in the middle ear and an external sound processor worn behind or within the ear. The processor converts sound into electromagnetic waves and transmits them through the skin, which causes the implant and the ossicles to vibrate. The brain interpretes these vibrations as amplified sound. Electromagnetic hearing aids are intended to improve hearing acuity in adults who have moderate to severe sensorineural hearing loss and who are dissatisfied with the level of sound perception or quality of sound provided by standard acoustic hearing aids.
