Pallidotomy, neurosurgical ablation of part or all of the globus pallidus, is purported to improve function of motor inhibitory circuits in medically refractory Parkinson's disease (PD) patients by destroying overactive regions responsible for excessive inhibitory activity and restoring balance of neuronal activity in direct and indirect pathways.
