Authors' objectives:
In off-pump coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery, bypass grafts are sutured onto a beating heart without the aid of a cardiopulmonary bypass pump. Off-pump coronary artery bypass (OPCAB) grafting was introduced as a means of avoiding the complications associated with the bypass pump and with arresting and restarting the heart during on-pump surgery. Complications that could potentially be avoided or reduced by off-pump surgery include excessive blood loss, atrial fibrillation, myocardial damage, transient ischemic attacks, and cerebrovascular accidents.
